Summer Changes

The end of the school year brings with it many changes. We say goodbye to one set of students and begin to prepare for the next. We also have many different tasks we must complete during the summer months. I will talk about a few of them as the summer months progress. Today I will be talking about one of the first changes we can often face, changing rooms.
This year will be the second time that I will be spending the summer changing classrooms. I had to completely pack up my classroom and get everything ready to move to my new classroom. This process is both exciting and so emotionally charged. I am ready to start the next school year with new students in a new classroom, but there is a part of me that sees this move as an even greater goodbye for this year’s students.
Summer can also bring other goodbyes. This year we will have colleagues leaving the school. As they pack up their personal items and take them out of the school building, those of us who are remaining behind feel the loss of good friends. This is the part of summer “break” no one prepares you for, the changes and goodbyes. Watching colleagues leave and/or moving yourself is all part of summer break.
The packing and moving of rooms is part of the work that begins when the students leave. There are so many other different jobs and tasks that teachers face during summer vacation. As we progress through the summer I will address some, but if you have other items you would like me to talk about please let me know. Hopefully, this summer is one of both refreshment and productivity for you.
