If You Get a Break, Take the Break

So, you are lucky enough to get a break from school. It may be for a holiday, or just a day off to aid the mental health of the staff in your district. No matter what the reason, you are so excited to realize that there is no school tomorrow. I know some of you are thinking, “Yay! I can get…(this done or that done).” I totally understand. I am actually looking forward to a 4 day weekend and my mind instantly thought of all the things that I could accomplish during that time. However, I am going to challenge you, and myself, to enjoy the break.
The work will still be at the school when you return. There are always papers to grade, and lessons to prep. That crazy awesome activity will still be crazy awesome after the break. Also, there will always be work that needs to be done at home, it does not have to be done on a break from school either. Now, understand, if your break is multiple days I totally get using some of those days to accomplish things at home. I am just saying, leave school work at the school.
Everyone needs a chance to relax. Your brain and body need time to reset and refresh. This does not mean you are weak. It does not mean that you do not love your job. When you have an opportunity to take a break, use it to focus on selfcare. Read that novel you've been dying to read. Take pictures while enjoying nature. Sleep in until noon, or stay up past 9 o’clock (gasp). This break is a chance to let your mind and body regain their focus and strength. No school talk, and do not even think of grading those essays you assigned last week.
This is also a great time to spend extra time with family and/or friends. We as teachers can get so busy taking care of other people's children that we can inadvertently neglect our own relationships. Our spouses/significant others, our own children (including animal babies), and our friends outside the school need our time and attention, too. Your family and friends will be your shelter in the storms that life can throw at you. You need to give those relationships the time and attention they need to be strong and vibrant.
So, whether your break is today, tomorrow, or not until some time in the future, I want you to make sure that at least one day you do not work on anything school related, at all. That day I don’t want you to deep clean that spare bedroom (like you always meant to) either. Those tasks will still be waiting for you some weekend or evening. This next break, one day is work free. It is a day of rest and relaxation to let your mind and body reset. Enjoy the break and just see how much better you feel the next day back at school. I think you will find that you are better able to face the challenges, and have more excitement for the lessons and activities. Give it a try!
